Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. – Arthur Ashe
This simple success mantra has been adopted for numerous impactful volunteer initiatives of Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu (KKPA) that pioneered the change for environmental and social causes till date.

Now, KKPA has grown to 100 regular volunteers and have worked on 300 Sundays (excluding CoVID Lockdown periods) till August-2023 and with the help of the College and School Students, NCC, RAF, other local NGO’s, and Local Public, have completed a number of projects, of which few key interventions are detailed here.

Perur Lake

The first project of KKPA was the reclamation of the 264-acre Perur Lake, carried out by its volunteers with Government permission during 2017.

Kuniyamuthur Check Dam & Canal

The 12.5-kilometer Kuniyamuthur Canal distributes water from the upper reaches of the Noyyal River to the Perur Lake, Sottaiyandi Kuttai, Ganganarayana Samudram, Sengulam and Kuniyamuthur Lakes.

Sengulam Lake

The 265-acre Sengulam Lake, situated in the suburbs of Coimbatore, was previously under the local Panchayat and was taken over by the Coimbatore Corporation when its areas were extended.

Vellalore Lake

A survey of lakes by KKPA revealed that Vellalore Lake, lying on the outskirts of the city, had not received water for over 17 years, due to local apathy, encroachment on the canal bund, poor maintenance of the canals and sluices, and lack of unity and leadership from the local populace.

Increase of Green Cover

In order to improve biodiversity, increase the green cover and be a deterrent to future encroachment of Government Land, KKPA obtained permission from the Authorities to plant tree saplings along the outer bund of Vellalore Lake.

Plantation of Palmyra

Palmyra, the State Tree of Tamilnadu, has been known to strengthen lake bunds, prevent seepage, conserve soil moisture and provide abundant Palmyra food products.

Disaster Relief

During the earlier Palmyra seed planting drive Karupampulam village in Nagapattinam District contributed a load of Palmyra seeds to KKPA, after observing an appeal for the same through Social media.

Forest clean up drive

The Tamilnadu Forest Department allows pilgrims to visit the Vellingiri Temple, which is nestled in the Western Ghats, on the border of Tamilnadu and Kerala, during the Chitrai Festival in summer, every year.

Volunteering for CoVID

During the Covid Lockdown as all shops and eateries were closed, KKPA volunteers provided lunch to 150 Corporation staff and Police Personnel working on duty, in Sundarapuram area in Coimbatore for 45 days.

Volunteering for environmental cause during Public Gatherings

During Adi 18th Hindu pilgrims flock to Perur Padithurai the Bathing Ghats on the upper reaches of river Noyyal, to pay respects to their dear departed.
