Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu (KKPA) has been undertaking afforestation and reforestation using the Miyawaki method in sensitive spots of Coimbatore city which represents a proactive approach towards restoring and enhancing the green cover in the urban landscape. With increasing urbanization and environmental concerns, it has become crucial to revive and protect natural habitats, promote biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change. The Miyawaki method, pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, offers a unique and effective technique for rapidly establishing dense and diverse forests in limited spaces.
The Miyawaki method emphasizes planting a variety of native tree species in dense clusters, mimicking the structure and diversity of natural forests. This approach results in accelerated growth, efficient space utilization, and rapid forest development. By creating mini forests using this method, the activity aims to restore degraded areas, enhance the city’s green cover, improve air quality, and create habitats for diverse flora and fauna.
Under the project, sensitive locations in Coimbatore are selected for afforestation efforts. These locations are identified based on their ecological significance, vulnerability to degradation, and potential for creating green spaces that provide multiple benefits to the environment and local communities.
Through afforestation and reforestation using the Miyawaki method, the KKPA aims to combat climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and improving microclimates. The initiative also contributes to water conservation, soil health improvement, and the promotion of sustainable urban ecosystems.
The activity involves a collaborative approach, engaging government bodies, corporate funding agencies, donors, supporters, local communities, and volunteers for plantation and maintenance of saplings. The active involvement of community and volunteers in planting and maintaining the forests fosters a sense of ownership and strengthens the bond between the community and nature. In a pioneering endeavor, the KKPA has been in the forefront of increasing the green cover of Coimbatore’s landscape through a range of afforestation and reforestation initiatives, the key information of which are given below.
In order to improve biodiversity, increase the green cover and be a deterrent to future encroachment of Government Land, KKPA obtained permission from the Authorities to plant tree saplings along the outer bund of Vellalore Lake. KKPA volunteers along with College Students and well-meaning citizens, worked on Sundays to remove the undergrowth of weeds, thorny shrubs and unwanted trees, levelled the land, dug up the soil, manured and made appropriate beds and planted more than 7500 tree saplings covering 274 different native species, under the Miyawaki plantation method, to accommodate the maximum number of trees in a small area. In addition to this about 90 varieties of herbal plants have been planted to educate the general public on the medicinal value of these plants. Interested persons have taken saplings from here to plant the same in their houses. In addition to this a butterfly garden was established with over 40 varieties of flowering plants to provide food to butterflies, bees, wasps and other insects.
The Miyawaki Plantation was funded by Cameron, Tamil Sangam of Atlanta and other well-meaning citizens. Philanthropists have chipped in with a bore well, pipeline and a submersible pump set to irrigate the plants. Today the Miyawaki plantation is a Botanists delight with trees which have touched 25 to 30 feet in height, within a span of 3 years. As envisaged the area has butterflies, different bugs, beetles, insects, birds, reptiles, rodents, amphibians, which seek refuge under the green cover. With water the migratory birds have returned to Vellalore lake and the Coimbatore Bird watchers have recorded the presence of 187 local and migratory bird species, which include Woolly necked stocks, Cormorants, Herons, Egrets, Kingfishers, Rose necked parakeets, Barn swallows, Western Yellow wagtails, Whiskered terns, Eurasian Collared doves, Asian palm swift and a host of other bird species. After a gap of many years Pelicans has nestled on the trees in the midst of the lake and take care of their young ones. The Nature and Butterfly Society, Coimbatore has recorded the presence of over 77 species of butterflies in this area.
