Water Body Rejuventation

Water body rejuvenation refers to the process of revitalizing and improving the ecological health and functionality of waterbodies such as lakes, rivers, wetlands, and coastal areas that have been degraded or damaged due to human activities or natural factors. The restoration efforts by KKPA aims to enhance water quality, biodiversity, habitat connectivity, and ecosystem services provided by these aquatic environments.

A typical water body rejuvenation process consists of various activities such as bush clearance and desilting the ponds to remove accumulated sediments, cleaning and removing pollutants, and implementing measures to prevent further contamination. Additionally, activities like embankment strengthening by means of mechanical compaction and clearing the channels of the catchment that drain to the ponds are also undertaken based on the need. Additionally, efforts are made to improve the water quality, enhance the natural habitat for aquatic species, and promote the overall well-being of the water body ecosystem.

The water body rejuvenation holds promise for multiple benefits, including the revival of a valuable water resource, increasing the water holding capacity, preservation of biodiversity, improvement of groundwater recharge, and the creation of a serene and aesthetically pleasing environment for the community. These water bodies were chosen due to their ecological significance, the challenges they face, and the potential benefits their restoration can bring to the local communities and the environment. The restoration of these water bodies marks a significant endeavour to revive and conserve these crucial water bodies. These traditional water bodies, hold immense ecological importance, supporting biodiversity, groundwater recharge, and providing a source of water for various purposes. Recognizing the deteriorating condition of the water bodies and the need for its preservation, efforts were undertaken by the KKPA to restore and revive the water bodies, ensuring its sustainable existence for the benefit of the local community and the environment.

The collective endeavour, for water body rejuvenation for which the KKPA has always been striving and continues to strive, aims to reverse the degradation of the water bodies, enhance its ecological value, and create a vibrant ecosystem that fosters biodiversity and ecological balance in all its areas of presence.
