Embarking on the Odyssey
Coimbatore, also called Kovai and often referred to as the 'Manchester of South India' due to its prominent role in the textile industry, is an exquisite region with its pleasant climate, proximity to Western Ghats, wide range of water resources including the Noyyal River and its system tanks that irrigates around 20000 acres of agricultural land of the region.
With time, it has transformed into one of the most vibrant districts of the country excelling in textiles, industry, commerce, education, information technology, and healthcare. On the flip side, the region also fell victim to over exploitation and severe mismanagement of water resources and environmental degradation resulting in severe water scarcity in the region.
Coimbatore reeled under severe water shortage in 2017 and the realization dawned on a small committed group of 14 youngsters, that the solution to Coimbatore’s water woes lay in cleaning and de-silting and maintenance of its Lakes, Ponds, Canals, Anicuts, Check Dams and various other Water Sources and thus Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu (KKPA), was formed as an NGO on 5th February, 2017.
