Coimbatore, also called Kovai and often referred to as the “Manchester of South India” due to its prominent role in the textile industry, is an exquisite region blessed with a pleasant climate, the majestic Western Ghats, and a rich network of water resources, including the Noyyal River and its interconnected tank system that irrigates around 20,000 acres of agricultural land.

Over the years, Coimbatore has transformed into one of the most vibrant and progressive districts in the country, excelling in textiles, industry, commerce, education, information technology, and healthcare. However, this rapid growth came at a cost. The region gradually became vulnerable to the overexploitation and mismanagement of its precious water resources, coupled with environmental degradation, leading to an alarming decline in water security and severe scarcity.

The unprecedented water crisis that gripped Coimbatore in 2017 served as a wake-up call for concerned citizens. Recognizing the urgent need for collective action, a dedicated group of 14 young individuals came together with a shared vision to restore and protect the region’s water heritage. They believed that sustainable solutions to Coimbatore’s water woes lay in the cleaning, desilting, restoration, and maintenance of lakes, ponds, canals, anicuts, check dams, and other vital water bodies. Guided by this mission and a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, Kovai Kulangal Padhukappu Amaippu (KKPA) was established as a non-governmental organization on 5th February 2017, laying the foundation for a community-driven movement towards water conservation and ecological revival.
